When we set an insulted unit, we only
use latex or water base caulk, because some of you have caulk
tears. Caulk tears are excess caulk from when the window frame was
assembled. Over time and 100+ summers, the oil base caulk has
melted and now runs down the glass or pools in the corners. The
latex caulk dries and turns clear, if we have some excess it can
be easily removed after it dries.
DO NOT tint your insulated glass, use
solar screens that will keep the heat and UV off of your windows.
DO NOT let the water sprinkler spay your glass every day. This
will keep stagnant water in the sash and will rot the seal.
When we set new insulated glass,
there are a few things that we do to keep from having a warranty
call. We use a supplier that makes quality products, that allows
us less than three warranty calls a year saving time and money.
TaylorGlass.com also uses new vinyl bead or facing. New bead holds
the glass firmly till the caulk is set and assures a tight seal
between the glass and metal frame. Picture windows have metal bead
that we reuse but we caulk after the metal in reinstalled for a
watertight seal.
This also applies to patio door glass
or wooden doors with insulated glass. Doors have to be tempered or
safety glass because of building codes. TaylorGlass.com also
replaces the rollers or the aluminum sliding doors. If the door is
dragging, do not oil the track because the bearing that needs
lubrication is inside the door frame. If you can adjust the door
roller be sure to lift or take the weight off the roller before
you turn the screw. If you forget or don't so this, the adjusting
screw will strip its threads. Now your door will be very hard to
open and close.
TaylorGlass.com also installs
insulated Plexiglas skylight bubbles, but not the shaft or roof
frame. The bubbles can be bought from a roofing supply house and
are very thin. We have ours made with 1/8 Plexiglas because we
have hail in this area several times a year. Because of the UV
rays, all makers only have a one year warranty the Plexiglas. Why
pay more for our bubbles? Because the mess and inconvenience of a
broken bubble far out ways the extra cost.
